Associate Provost, Academic and Information Technology
The addition of Information Technology to my portfolio includes the following responsibilities for both academic and non-academic computing on campus:
- Strategic leadership and executive oversight of the largest software and hardware learning program in North America with responsibilities for managing 10,000 student laptop computers and a comprehensive technology-enhanced learning program for all students and faculty at UOIT.
- Management of the software learning program currently including more than 300+ separate software programs ($1,000,000).
- Responsibility for the Mobile Program ($14,000,000) and a university budget ($5,000,000) including a total of 70-permanent and outsourced staff.
- Overall responsibility for UOIT Information Technology Services including budgeting, planning and operations.
2009 – 2013
Associate Provost, Academic
The primary responsibilities of the Associate Provost are as follows:
- Overall academic policy development, monitoring and review.
- Overall responsibility for all aspects of Academic Misconduct, including the administration of university policies and decisions regarding sanctions.
- Responsible for the development, monitoring and administration of non-academic student misconduct; liaise with campus security regarding non-academic sanctions.
- Provide institutional leadership re: the development and monitoring of college-university and university-college pathways.
- Responsible for establishing service levels and monitoring services regarding all aspects of learning technologies on campus including the student laptop program, learning systems, software procurement and budget development.
- Responsible for overall undergraduate program review (both internal and external reporting) for all undergraduate programs.
- Oversee the development of continuing education (CE) academic policies and coordination across faculties re: the delivery of CE programs (credit and non-credit).
- Provide strategic direction and shared oversight re: the development of UOIT student services with emphasis on Student Services, IT Services and Learner Support Services.
- Responsible for organizing and leading Senior Academic Team retreats held twice annually.
- Lead responsibility for developing the Academic Success Center including 8 full-time staff and 60 peer mentors.

Associate Provost, Teaching and Learning
The primary responsibilities of the Associate Provost were as follows:
- Online, hybrid distance programs and continuing education initiatives;
- Course evaluations and reporting;
- Faculty orientation and mentorship programs (125 faculty have participated to date);
- Academic integrity (policy development and administration);
- Managing faculty development programs for annual academic reviews, 3rd year reviews and tenure preparation and application;
- Coordinate the design and recommendations for new learning technologies with individual Faculties;
- Teaching/learning support services:
- Teaching and Learning Center (TLC): The TLC is responsible for offering professional development services to all faculty and staff at UOIT. Working closely with each faculty, the Centre ensures that faculty members are provided with the greatest possible range of tools and facilities to assist them in providing a rich web-centric learning experience for students.
- The Office of the Associate Provost, Teaching and Learning (OAPTL): The OAPTL coordinates university and shared services to facilitate a coordinated support system for the web-centric teaching and learning environment at UOIT. The office coordinates both pedagogical and technological services and administers programs including academic policy development, university Teaching Awards, online and hybrid course development, copyright compliance, multimedia development, teaching simulation design and development, research into teaching practices, classroom and technological supports and curriculum development and renewal.
- The OPTL establishes learning technologies requirements for UOIT through coordinated consultation and planning across faculties and manages information technologies for learning
- Development of research projects concerning the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
- Provide strategic leadership regarding applications to the Postsecondary Education Quality Assurance Board (PEQAB) for undergraduate program and degree approval.
- Coordinate university-wide undergraduate program and degree review and recommends to Academic Council all changes to undergraduate program renewal.
- Design and administer all services for improvements in teaching using learning technology.
- First-generation programming for students.
- Academic space planning.

Founding Co-Director Health Education Technology Research Unit (HETRU)
Faculty of Health Sciences
HETRU was founded in 2005 to focus on the use of advanced technologies to create teaching, learning, and learning assessment environments based on rigorous scientific evidence. HETRU was conceived as an academic-business hybrid to drive advances in research related to the evidence-based use of advanced technologies in education within the Health Sciences and other UOIT Faculties. The research unit conducted interdisciplinary research focused on the development of teaching, learning, and assessment environments for all levels of professional development, academic training, and continuing education of healthcare providers. Specific research and development projects involved:

2003 – 2005
Associate Provost, Learning Technologies
The primary responsibilities of the Associate Provost Learning Technologies were as follows:
- Establish the UOIT academic program to support mobile (laptop) learning.
- Designed, implemented and evaluated a campus-wide Strategic Plan for learning technologies.
- Policy development processes pertaining to the use of technology for teaching and learning.
- Reviewed and approved curricula for all undergraduate programs (Chair: UOIT Program and Curriculum Review Committee).
- Planned and implemented faculty development in e-learning and information and communication technology.
- Supported faculty to develop web-enhanced courses and multimedia components.
- Coordinated and integrated learning initiatives and information technologies projects within and between UOIT Faculties.
- Supported the Research Office to establish a Learning Technologies Research Unit building upon the test-bed technology infrastructure.
- Established positive working relationships between UOIT, government, industry and key stakeholder organizations to design and implement value-added collaborative projects.
- Promoted and marketed UOIT and its leading-edge use of technology and web-centric learning at provincial and national levels.

Director of Learning Technologies
The primary responsibilities of the Director of Learning Technologies were as follows:
- Provided leadership in all areas of learning technologies for UOIT and Durham College (DC).
- Established the overall direction and implementation of e-learning through the management of the Innovation Center which provided faculty development to both UOIT and DC faculty members.
- Developed and marketed integrated web-centric services through the Innovation Centre to support primary course development for all programs and courses at UOIT and DC. Note: This position was created before the legal establishment of UOIT.

2009- 2010. Consultation with King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia regarding the development of an e-learning development center and e-learning initiative to support online learning, online course development, faculty development and multimedia simulations.
2008. Consultation with Dietitians of Canada to provide strategic advice on Web 2.0, web-presence, social software, podcasting and emerging mobile technologies to enhance services to members of Dietitians of Canada based on their “2020 Vision”.
2008. Consultation with King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to conduct faculty development regarding strategic planning workshops concerned establishing mobile learning programs, faculty development initiatives and design of information technology infrastructures for webcentric learning.
2003. Contracted by the Curriculum Corporation to conduct an assessment of learning objects, models and frameworks for the online curriculum content initiative (Phase 1). The Learning Federation is a collaborative initiative of Australia’s State, Territory and Commonwealth governments and the New Zealand government.
2002. External Consultant for Royal Roads University to review Masters of Distributed Learning and develop Masters of Learning and Technology.
2002. Contracted by Health Canada (Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention & Control) to conduct a “Gaps and Needs Assessment” to identify current capacities of health care professionals to provide diabetes education to policy makers, communities, and people living with diabetes and what they view as best practice.
1997. Contracted by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Organization for Cooperation in Overseas Development (OCOD) to design and implement a series of teacher training workshops in the British Virgin Islands, West Indies. The workshops were delivered during the summer months to Ministry of Education personnel as part of a continuing education program. Content focused on database development and application to school-based record keeping.
1991-1995. Contracted by CIDA and OCOD to design and implement a series of teacher training workshops in Grenada, West Indies. The workshops were delivered during the summer months to Ministry of Education personnel as part of a continuing education program.
